The world on a pavement

I saw this recently on a trip to Takaoka. It was written on the pavement next to an Indian restaurant called Shangri-La. The kanji say "Sekai", the Japanese word for "the world". The right-hand character looks a bit like a square-headed alien from outer space (as opposed to me, a round-headed alien from the UK).
